The Shrine of Sayyida Ruqayya in Damascus is a deeply significant site for Shia Muslims, commemorating the short yet poignant life of Ruqayya bint Al Husayn, the young daughter of Imam Husayn ibn Ali and great granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. According to tradition, she was taken captive after the tragedy of Karbala in 680 CE and brought to Damascus, where she passed away at the age of four in a prison near the Umayyad court. Her burial place became a site of devotion, and over the centuries, the location was rebuilt and expanded. The current mosque and mausoleum, completed in 1985, is a striking example of modern Iranian influenced Islamic architecture, with dazzling mirror mosaics, intricate tilework, and a luminous golden dome. Located in the Al Amara district of the Old City, the shrine draws pilgrims from across the world, especially during Ashura and other commemorations of Karbala, serving as both a place of mourning and a symbol of the endurance and sanctity of the Prophet’s family.
